The fast bowler Poised for a Major Role in Ashes Series

Test match action

The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief the selector has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on 21 November in Perth.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of taking part.

"We know that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Injury History

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
