The ex-president's voracious urge for payback has rapidly transformed into a organized apparatus. Within the twelve months, the leader's rage and impulses have assumed the guise of administrative measures in ways reminiscent to historical authoritarian governments. Government personnel who resist his demands are immediately removed and replaced by supporters. Political leaders who question him encounter legal action, judicial process and sanctions. Adversaries have been categorized under executive memoranda as “unpatriotic”, “anti-Christian” and “opposing economic freedom”, and menaced with prosecution as “security threats”.
Federal Agencies Transformed
All case involving legal action of political opponents and protection for loyalists displays its own unique features. But, notwithstanding their individual form, they exemplify manifestations of what has emerged as a calculated technique. Those events are not random. His cleansing of Department of Justice prosecutors and Federal Bureau of Investigation agents, coupled with his installation of supporters in senior positions, started rapidly, soon developed a pattern, and has now been shaped into a structure. The justice department and the FBI have been restructured into ideological agencies under the president's clear orders to carry out his demands. Wrongdoing has been rendered standard. It constitutes the system of punishment.
Administration is more concerned with penalizing the chief's alleged opponents than they are with protecting our country's safety.
Inside the System
The beginnings of this mechanism has been exposed in the legal complaint of several former top Federal Bureau officials submitted in September in the US district court in DC against FBI director Kash Patel and top lawyer Pam Bondi for illegal termination in “a initiative of retribution against the officials for what Defendants considered to be a refusal to show sufficient devotion”. In the complaint that one official, the previous acting FBI director, recounts a conversation in which the director “freely acknowledged the impropriety of his actions”.
The official had sought to defend law enforcement officers from being fired, the filing claims. The director told him that “White House figures” – perceived by Driscoll to be the presidential administration and justice department – had ordered him to remove everyone who they considered as having participated in a legal probe against him. The complaint goes on: “He clarified that he had to fire the individuals his bosses told him to remove, because his ability to retain his own job depended on the removal of the personnel who handled investigations involving the leader. The director commented that there was nothing he or the official could do to halt these or any other firings, because ‘the bureau attempted to incarcerate the leader in jail and he remembers.’” When Driscoll informed Patel he was breaking the FBI's own internal rules, Patel allegedly said “he understood that and he knew the essence of the immediate dismissals were likely improper”.
Broad Consequences
Following the director's claimed admission to Driscoll, the justice department and the law enforcement agency have been gutted and repurposed for the administration's system of punishment. Several of the FBI's senior executives were terminated or compelled to leave in the first days of the administration. About numerous professional attorneys at DoJ have accepted a “deferred resignation program”. At least several DoJ lawyers, such as those in the Manhattan division, resigned in protest over what they viewed as partisan influence in withdrawing the criminal prosecution against the local official, a political figure, in return for his assistance with his ICE roundups of foreign nationals. The public integrity section of the justice department, which manages corruption cases, has been diminished to minimal staff. The rights protection unit has been decimated: the majority of its personnel has left. One-third of senior leaders at the justice department have resigned. The unit implementing ecological regulations has seen departures of 50% its leadership.
Rewards and Sanctions
Concerning the legal matter, the temporary lawyer for the southern district of New York, the official, resigned in protest against what she described as the “exchange”. The border official, the president's “border czar,” was present as the enforcer with Adams on Fox News to announce: “If he doesn't come through, I'll be back in NYC.”. Meanwhile, another figure, previously the senior DoJ official and a past legal representative, who negotiated the deal, was given an court role, a likely springboard to the supreme court.
The president's protection for crimes carried out while in government, granted by the remarkable decision of the GOP-led on the judicial body, thus thwarting his criminal case over the January 6 insurrection and safeguarding his political viability for the national vote, is the cornerstone on which he stands to shield his stalwarts. Given this protection, he has been empowered to authorize wrongdoing. The effect of the judicial ruling infuses his presidency and the GOP down to its bones. The court matter has spread. As a past leader's legal adviser John Dean remarked about the Watergate
