Users will soon have a new feature that enables them to cut down on the volume of artificial intelligence-produced media appearing in their feeds. This step comes as the service revealed that it currently hosts more than 1 thousand million content made with AI.
Pilot Phase and Launch
The new functionality is being tested over the coming weeks before a full-scale rollout. This advancement comes amid a rise in AI content, spurred by recent video-generation tools.
AI Content on Other Platforms
Recent reports that approximately 10% of the quickest rising video streams on a popular video site only show AI-generated videos. A considerable share of this material is considered low-quality AI content, a label for poor-quality, bulk-generated content that is typically nonsensical or dreamlike.
Our research shows that many people like content created using AI tools, ranging from AI artwork to informative clips, and we intend to provide users the ability to adjust the amount of that, based on their own preferences,” commented a company executive.
Volume and Proportions
The service disclosed that there are currently 1.3 billion videos on its network labeled as artificially created. Overall, over 100 mn media items are uploaded to the platform daily, making clips made by AI a relatively small part of its total content library.
How to Adjust Settings
Members will be in a position to reduce or increase the volume of AI-generated videos they view by accessing the content preference option in the application and choosing “AI-generated content”. Other topics that can already be controlled under the filter cover current affairs, fashion, aesthetics, and movement.
AI Disclosure Rules
The platform’s rules require creators to tag lifelike artificially created content, and it bans harmful AI impersonations of public figures or emergencies. Any realistic AI-generated clip that is without a tag can be removed under its user guidelines.
Additionally, the platform will from now on add an artificially created tag to content made using its own AI tools, or flagged by an collaborative effort for identifying artificial media. This action is intended to help prevent users from trying to evade the labeling process.
Responsible AI Funding
TikTok is also introducing a two million dollar AI literacy fund for professionals and organizations to develop learning resources about using AI responsibly. This initiative will benefit non-profit groups focused on teaching coding and technology.
Content Safety Approach
The video-sharing app has justified its safety measures, following controversy over proposals to lay off hundreds of content moderators in the United Kingdom. The company is expected to reduce 439 jobs in its user protection team in its British office, with worker representatives and internet security professionals voicing alarm that staff are being displaced by AI moderation.
A senior executive explained that staff-based oversight would continue to be important, but AI can shield workers by filtering out the most distressing content prior to it is viewed by humans. TikTok stated a 76% decrease in explicit and harmful content handled by human moderators over the past year due to reliance on its machine learning processes.
We believe it is crucial to integrate humans and technology to maintain a secure environment,” the executive stated. “We’ll have people as integral to the approach, but we also think it’s extremely critical to minimize viewing of dangerous material as rapidly, which is why a significant AI assistance is making a difference operate efficiently.”
